Mission Statement
The Mission of Radio Station KREV-LP is to enhance the educational and cultural opportunities available in the Estes Valley by broadcasting a diverse mixture of programming that focuses on community specific information, religious and secular programs, and a variety of music. KREV-LP seeks to provide service to the Estes Valley through communication of information and entertainment.
History
KREV-LP (104.7 FM) was established in 2002 as a low power FM radio station to serve as a source of information and entertainment for the Estes Valley. The station, which broadcasts 24/7, has functioned with volunteer staff since its inception. KREV-LP has recently relocated its transmitter, providing increased access to greater numbers of listeners, and has moved the radio studio to be closer to the broadcast tower and internet servers that provide streaming services. This move increased operating costs significantly, since studio space had previously been provided “in-kind” by the United Methodist Church. The ability to reach greater numbers of listeners through broadcast and internet streaming has also increased the need for greater technical expertise than can be provided by volunteers.
Benefits to Residents of Estes Valley
KREV-LP is currently the only locally operating radio station in the Estes Valley. The geological location of the Estes Valley, essentially surrounded by mountains, means receiving signals from outlying stations can be sporadic and undependable. Frequent Public Service Announcements provide information for locals and visitors alike on the myriad activities and events available throughout the Estes Valley. With an equipment upgrade, we would be able to offer Emergency Information through the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Community partners, including the Park Valley School District, Estes Park Health, Police Department and Fire District, contribute information and educational programming, adding richness to the variety and quality of the broadcasts. Weekly in-depth interviews with local leaders help inform residents about community issues. The diverse music offerings are designed to reach out to as many Valley residents as possible and run the gamut from Latino and German to Oldies, Gospel and Classical. Estes Valley Latino residents can receive with Spanish language programming and announcements, especially emergency, educational, and safety announcements.
Use of Funding
The annual operating budget of KREV-LP includes annual license fees to BMI, ASCAP and SESAC, rent/utilities/phone, and monthly fees for data services. All other staffing, programming and support services are provided by community volunteers. Our main sources of income include underwriting of programs by businesses and individuals, and donations from listeners.
Community Awareness Campaign Goals
KREV-LP has ambitious goals. We anticipate reaching reach up to 10,000 people in the Estes Valley listening area, bringing them emergency information, community cultural/educational events and programming, as well as entertainment. The Estes Valley is the summer home of many seasonal residents who are able to stay in touch with happenings in the Estes Valley through internet streaming, increasing listenership across the country. Providing support for needed technical expertise to enhance the quality of programming allows volunteers to focus on seeking underwriting support and developing additional community focused programming. Increasing the technical capacity of the station will allow volunteer time to be spent on raising community awareness and participation.
